Tax Refund Helps Fredericksburg Woman Save for Emergencies

What does Jeanne Acree like about getting her taxes prepared at Rappahannock United Way?
She never feels tense or worried about the process.
“It’s a good experience,” said Acree, who’s been coming to Rappahannock United Way for the past five years, but relied on a family member or paid a preparer to do her taxes in the past. “I feel so different being here. It’s a secure feeling. It’s been pleasant every time and I don’t have to put out any money to do it. I’m grateful for it.”
Acree is happy a friend recommended the free service to her. Not only does it save her hundreds of dollars in tax preparation fees, but she’s also started saving her tax refund each year since coming to Rappahannock United Way and being encouraged to save.
“I usually put it all in savings,” said Acree, who works three hours a day cleaning for a local business and likes to have the extra money set aside. “It’s emergency money just in case something goes wrong.”
Over the past few years, that emergency money has come in handy for essentials such as car repairs.
“Without a car, you don’t get to work,” said Acree. “I was glad it was there. I really appreciate what you all do. It just makes such a difference in this world.”
