RUW STATEMENT OF POSITION ON HARASSMENT

At Rappahannock United Way, we have no tolerance for discrimination or harassment of any kind. Our mission is to “improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community.”

Our focus is serving the Greater Fredericksburg Area and to build a community that is hopeful, resilient and self-sufficient. We do this by working alongside community partners to ensure more equitable access to opportunities for all.

Rappahannock United Way is one of nearly 1,800 locally-run member organizations of United Way Worldwide and is an independent 501(c)(3) with our own governance structure. We are a separate and independent organization that is governed by a local board of volunteer directors, who have ultimate authority over our United Way.

Rappahannock United Way has a written policy in the Human Resources Employee Handbook that states the organization’s intolerance of any form of sexual harassment in the workplace.

Our sexual harassment guidelines are based on rules and procedures established by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

We require employees to adhere to the organization’s Code of Ethics and have procedures in place to respond to any conduct that is outside of that scope of behavior. In light of allegations of harassment at United Way Worldwide, we are working to ensure those policies and procedures are acknowledged by all staff and regularly updated as necessary.

We have received the following statement from UWW, which has indicated these allegations are currently under a third-party investigation. We have no additional details to add at this time.

United Way Worldwide Response to Allegations

“United Way Worldwide takes all workplace issues and reports of misconduct very seriously. Any type of misconduct is met with zero tolerance and UWW has strong policies and procedures in place to report and address this type of behavior; including protections for those who lodge complaints about misconduct. We have engaged the law firm of Proskauer Rose LLP to independently investigate allegations of misconduct and review our policies and procedures to ensure that they continue to support an inclusive, respectful and safe work environment. Due to the ongoing investigation and the confidential nature of the claims referenced, we cannot discuss the allegations further.”

While we are confident in our policies and procedures, these situations remind us of the importance of ensuring that staff and volunteers are always protected. We strive to maintain a supportive and respectful workplace environment, and we have strong procedures in place to report and address any types of misconduct; including protection for those who bring allegations of this behavior. Rappahannock United Way is committed to ensuring that our workplace remains a safe place for everyone.

Diversity and Inclusion

Rappahannock United Way aspires to integrate diversity and inclusion into all systems, policies, practices and behaviors of the organization. We are intentional in our efforts to have our staff, boards, committees, and councils represent the diversity of the communities we serve.  We mobilize and partner with community groups working to help individuals emerge from poverty and achieve greater financial stability. By promoting an inclusive environment where everyone respects and values the contributions of individuals of different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, we can enrich and strengthen the quality of our work and help to ensure the success of our community.
