Working Hard but Struggling to Survive.

We all know people who are ALICE®: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — earning more than the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford the basics where they live. ALICE workers were celebrated as essential heroes during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet they do not earn enough to support their own families.

ALICE households and households in poverty are forced to make tough choices, such as deciding between quality child care or paying the rent — choices that have long-term consequences not only for their families, but for all.

Please help Rappahannock United Way support local ALICE families during challenging times.  The impact of a one-time life event, such as the loss of a job, a divorce or an unexpected car repair bill, affects the health and economic well-being of ALICE and our whole community.   In 2022-2023, Rappahannock United Way provided financial assistance to more than 200 local households - paying mortgage, rent and transportation bills to keep individuals and families remain safely housed and in work and school.

As the cost of living continues to rise, so does the need in our community. As always, we simply cannot do this without you.  Your continued support of our ALICE community is critical. Please continue to BE THERE with us as we work to protect those who are ALICE against the financial hardship.

Together, we can work to create a community that is hopeful, resilient and self-sufficient.

How the ALICE Assistance Fund Helps

Ms. W lives in Spotsylvania County and had been regularly employed by a temp agency. Unfortunately, she was in a car accident which resulted in the loss of her vehicle which meant she could not get to her place of work.

Ms. W was actively working with the temp agency to get a work placement that was remote until her car insurance came through and she could get a new vehicle. Ms. W had been financially stable and regularly paying her rent on time, but due to her losing her work placement she needed help with rent.

Thanks to the ALICE Assistance program, Rappahannock United Way was able to cover a couple of month's rent for Ms. W so that she could focus on getting a new work placement and finding a new car, without the worry of becoming homeless.

“Rappahannock United way helped me during a time in my life that felt like rock bottom, after my car accident I was without a vehicle and a job, with no money to pay my rent. United Way helped me with that, this chapter of my life has been the most humbling experience ever, asking for help, seeking outside resources that I never knew I would have to do, I’m thankful for United Way because throughout this process they didn’t make me feel less then but kept me encouraged. I’m forever thankful for them and to anyone else that may face a financial hardship, it’s okay to ask for help!”
