Volunteers help us put nearly $2 Million back into our community each year.
Last year, RUW volunteers completed 2,000 federal and state income tax returns, putting more than $1.9 million back into our community last year. RUW taxpayers saved an estimated $380,000 in tax preparation fees. Managed by RUW staff, this program is operated entirely by volunteers.
Volunteers are a vital part of the Tax Program. Prior experience is not required; volunteers are trained by Rappahannock United Way and certified by the IRS.
Join the volunteers who make a significant financial impact in our community. Contact Kathryn Palmer for more information.
How can you help?
Greeters provide a warm welcome and keep things moving in the waiting area.
Greeters with RUW's Tax Program are the first people that tax payers meet when they arrive at our tax sites. A Greeter is responsible for welcoming tax payers, verifying they have proper documentation, and that they meet the criteria for the Tax Program. Greeters must be comfortable speaking with people and monitoring the waiting area. Greeters don't answer any tax questions.
Tax preparers help clients complete tax returns using software.
A Volunteer Tax Preparer is responsible to conduct client interviews, help clients complete accurate tax returns, and distribute client surveys. Volunteer Tax Preparers must be comfortable speaking with people, reviewing tax documents for information, and using a computer based tax software to help clients complete tax returns.
Volunteer Tax Preparers may be asked to help with reviewing tax returns that have been completed by other volunteer Tax Preparers prior to filing. Some volunteer Tax Preparers may be asked to be designated Quality Reviewers.
Tax Training Events
Tax Trainings are scheduled in December and January each year in preparation for the Tax Season. If you would like to volunteer, and no training events are scheduled, please contact Kathryn Palmer to arrange for training.
