Who is Eligible?
Anyone who has a household income of $64,000 or less – regardless of family size – is eligible for free income tax preparation assistance, as long as they are within the scope of service. You could also be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit! Although RUW’s Free Tax Prep program can assist with most returns, we must follow IRS guidelines and cannot prepare certain types of returns.
Households earning less than $64,000 that have returns outside of the scope of service may be eligible to file using MyFreeTaxes or TurboTax Freedom Edition.

Free Online Filing
Comfortable preparing and filing your own taxes? If you meet income guidelines, you can do it for free online from anywhere! No need to purchase tax prep software or pay preparation fees!
If you use either of our free filing options and are prompted to upgrade for a fee, do not upgrade. Contact RUW at (540) 373-0041. These options are free for any household that meets the household income requirement.
Free In-Person Assistance
Services After the Filing Deadline
After the filing deadline, we may still be able to assist you in getting your taxes filed! If you need returns completed, stop by the RUW office on Wednesdays from 9AM - 12PM (through June 30) to complete a simple intake form. Bring all your tax documentation with you. Staff will scan your documents, complete your return and contact you to sign and file (allow up to 2 weeks for this process). Download the flyer below for details on what to bring.
Full Service Returns
During tax season (Jan-April) IRS-certified volunteers provide free income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in local communities. Volunteers can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. Sites are located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, and the Rappahannock United Way building.
Join us at one of our Coached (FSA) locations during tax season (Jan-April) to use our computer and internet connection to prepare and file your taxes. If you have questions, one of our volunteers will be available to assist you with your return. Avoid the wait - prepare your own return! No cost for software or coaching - it's completely free!
Accomodations: Please contact Rappahannock United Way directly to request special accommodations at least ten (10) days prior to event date.
Free Tax Preparation Assistance is offered in conjunction with the Rappahannock Region Financial Stability Coalition.
